What is Electrotherapy?

At Prorehab Physio, electrical modalities such as ultrasound, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), or muscle stimulation may be one of the treatment options used to help resolve your injury and relieve pain.

Ultrasound Therapy
Ultrasound Therapy in Crawley is a high frequency sound wave that is absorbed, painlessly, by our soft tissues. It has a number of effects at the molecular level including a micro-massage effect on tissues such as muscle, tendon, and ligament. One of the Therapeutic effects for which ultrasound has been used is in relation to tissue healing. It is suggested that the application of Ultrasound to the injured walls , amongst other things, speed the rate of healing and enhance the quality of repair ( Watson 2006).This can be helpful in healing certain injuries, particularly in calcific tendinitis and haematomas or bruises in muscle.

TENS
TENS is a drug-free method to help control pain. Electrical impulses are delivered through electrodes placed on the skin in an attempt to control the brain's perceived pain impulses. This can be useful as part of a treatment plan for pain control.

Interferential
The basic principle of Interferential (IFT) is to utilise the significant Physiological effects of low frequency electrical stimulation of the nerves without the associated painful and somewhat unpleasant side effects sometimes associated with low frequency stimulation. IFT is mainly used for pain relief, muscle stimulation, increased blood flow and reduction of Oedema.
